Questions and Answers about The Bon Ton RouletWhen is the tour?The tour starts on Sunday, July 20th, 2008, and finishes on Saturday, July 26th, 2008. Because the tour starts at 8:00am on Sunday, many people choose to arrive on Saturday, July 19th, 2008. How do we get to the Bon Ton Roulet?A shuttle service from and to the Syracuse Airport will be provided. The cost is $50 per person and includes transportation to the start and back from the end for the cyclist, bicycle and gear. The scheduled pickup will be determined once we have everyone’s flight plans. Bicycles can be pre-shipped to a bicycle shop and delivered to the start. Details will be in the Rider Packet. Where does the tour go in 2008?The route will be within the scenic Finger Lakes region of Central New York. Please see the route page for details. How much does the trip cost?Until June 15th, 2008 the fee per person will be $485. After June 15th the registration fee is $510. You will need money for lunches. You should also bring extra money if you would like to make any purchases along the way. (Wine, souvenirs, etc...) Can I get my money back if I can't make the tour?The Bon Ton Roulet will refund all except $50 of the entry fee until July 1st, 2008. After that time no refunds will be made except for emergency situations. Absolutely No Refunds after Friday, July 18th, 2008. What do we do during the day?Each morning, a truck will be waiting for your luggage. You are then free to travel the established route, riding at your own pace, stopping along the way to admire the attractions, and arriving when you wish. Parents and minors participating together are required to stay together during the day’s ride. Along the way you’ll find smiling faces with snacks, drinks, support, repair vehicles, and volunteer ride support to take care of all your daily needs. Where do we eat?The Bon Ton Roulet will provide a breakfast each day and dinner each night (except for Thursday when you will be on your own for dinner in Watkins Glen). Snacks and drinks will be provided twice daily. Lunch is on your own. Where do we stay?The Bon Ton Roulet is a camping tour. Each night, as your trip winds down for the day, you can set up camp at the official campsite within that day’s community. Trucks will transport all of your packs each morning to that evening’s campsite. This year we will be staying in Watkins Glen for two nights. During the second day two rides will be offered, a Century Ride or a Shorter Option. What if I don't want to camp out?A list of alternative lodging options will be provided to you. It is up to you to make your own alternative lodging plans. (see the Lodging page for details.) Special Delivery to designated area accommodations is provided by the Auburn Rotary Club. The $12.00 per night fee includes: Transportation to the accommodation for the cyclist, bicycle and gear pickup in the morning. All funds raised by Special Delivery helps support the clubs service projects. What do I get for my registration?For your $485 registration fee you will get camping accommodations throughout the tour, two meals and two refreshments stops per day (except for Thursday), entertainment, luggage transport, support services, route map, shirt, and a refreshing weeklong tour of the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York. An average of fifty miles a day seems like a lot!You can bicycle 50 miles in five hours or less of actual biking, leaving plenty of time for sight-seeing, taking a dip in one of the areas many swimming holes, visiting a historic site, or even taking in the Finger Lake’s famous wineries. Rides (SAG) are available for physical and mechanical breakdowns. Fifty miles a day doesn’t seem like much!The Bon Ton Roulet is a different kind of bicycle tour, designed for relaxation, and just plain FUN!. Ride at a leisurely pace, take time to see the sights, and finish the week rested. And if you really want more miles than this week provides, an optional century ride will be available. Flat Landers be prepared for some challenging hills. What sort of terrain will we ride on?The Finger Lakes of Central New York is a glacial landform. (This means some hills.) The lakes were dug when glaciers came through in the last ice age. There are more hills when traveling east and west across the paths of the glaciers. When traveling north or south the roads are more level. All of the roads are checked by us before the tour begins to make sure that they are all in good condition and adequately marked. All of the roads are smooth enough for a road bike or hybrid to negotiate. What will I need for the tour?A multi-geared, better quality bicycle will make the tour much more enjoyable. Granny gears are recommended. Second, you must have a helmet – you won’t be allowed on the ride without one. Third, you’ll need a small tent and other basic camping gear, sleeping bag, etc. Fourth, bring proper clothing for all weather conditions. Everything you take should fit into one large or two small bags.(Suggested List) Why should I sign up?To some, the Bon Ton Roulet will be a week spent with fellow cyclists in an enthusiastic atmosphere. For others, it will be time enjoyed with family members or renewing old friendships. Some will see The Bon Ton Roulet , as an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful region of Upstate New York, in a truly unique manner and at their own pace. People can take in the quaint shops, beautiful lakes, historic sites, or even tour many of the area’s famous wineries!
